Who are the people in your neighborhood?

Mr. Rogers was infamous for asking this question. Who are the people in your neighborhood? Do you know your neighbors?

mister rodgersA year ago we moved into a new neighborhood and we were invited to our neighbors house for brunch. At this brunch we met several other families. I couldn’t believe how nice and welcoming everyone was. The hostess began the brunch by thanking everyone in attendance and expressing her gratitude for all of us coming together and spending some time getting to know one another.

My husband and I were so moved by this woman. She opened her home, served us brunch, and encourage us to meet the people that we call our neighbors. We have moved 9 times in 8 years and this was the first time that we have been welcomed by a neighbor. It was so refreshing and truly a wonderful experience. It turns out this was the first neighborhood brunch and she would continue doing it the last Friday of the month for dinner. It’s been a year now and this past Friday we all got together and celebrated the first anniversary of the neighborhood gatherings.

A year later we are delighted to know most of our neighbors and have really healthy and loving relationships. We’ve gotten to know them. We’ve been there for each other when little life emergencies have happened. We’ve had tons of laughs and good times. My children have made wonderful friendships with all the other kids and most important I know my neighbors. I know who they are. I know what they do for a living. I’ve met most of their families and friends too!

They aren’t just people that fill the houses on our street. There are actually smiles and hellos as we go through our days. It creates a really healthy and loving environment.

I would highly recommended that you walk over and introduce yourself to your neighbor. Have a cup of coffee on your front porch or make a date to go to the playground with the kids. It’s so important to know who is on your block.

As the holidays approach, let’s share some of that holiday spirit with our neighbors. You never know how you may be impacting their lives in an amazing way!!!
