What are lactation cookies?

I’ve always enjoyed this question. I’ve received some weird looks in the past when I tell people that I make lactation cookies at home and that the name of my company is “Mama’s Lactation Treats”. The most popular question I’ve heard is, “Do you put your own milk in the cookies & eat them?”  No. I don’t. That’s just weird, okay?!

lac cookiesLactation cookies are made up of many different ingredients that help a nursing mother either maintain her supply or boost it.  It has nothing to do with actual breastmilk.  I make them at home and sell them to other moms who need help building a supply up for when they go back to work.

I got my inspiration to start making these delicious cookies when I was pregnant with my second child. I was determined to be able to breastfeed, no matter what I had to do, because breastfeeding didn’t go well at all with my first.  I was 19, working full time, and I had a boyfriend who couldn’t keep a job.  He wasn’t able to be trusted with our daughter, so I still had to pay for child care.  Needless to say, I was stressed, and my supply dried up.

When I was 20, I got married to an amazing man, and we made the wonderful decision to get married and have more children!  Throughout my second pregnancy, I did a lot of online research and experimenting in the kitchen to perfect the ingredients for these amazing cookies!  I went through all the Pinterest boards, Facebook posts, online blog posts, and whatever else you could think of to figure out where other people messed up, and where I could get it right. What I found out is that nobody in my hometown of Fairbanks, Alaska, sold these cookies!

After figuring that out, I looked into how I could make a business out of it.  I’ve always wanted to be a business owner, but I never had something I was truly passionate about until I couldn’t breastfeed my daughter.  That was heartbreaking.  So, I researched my local cottage laws, and I figured out that I can make $25,000 a year just baking cookies and selling them out of my own kitchen!  No licensing, no bakery, just my own kitchen and some flour.  The downside to that was that I couldn’t sell them online.

When I moved to Washington, things changed a little bit.  Washington has much stricter cottage laws and a lot of fees – for every single thing you do.  They are micromanaging liberals that drive me bonkers.  Anyway, I found a way that enables me to sell online and still enjoy what I do with very little inconvenience.  I got my food processor’s license!  This license makes it completely legal for me to ship anywhere I want and to sell in stores!  Talk about a relief in this house.

If you’re a nursing mom or going to be nursing, I highly encourage you to visit my business Facebook page and send me a message!  I can tell you all about lactation cookies, what’s in them, and how they work.

I’m always available to chat and offer encouragement when it comes to breastfeeding.  I promise it doesn’t have to be as hard as everyone makes it sound! Cheers to BF! xo
