Opening my Eyes to Choices and a New Career!

This is my firstTess New Profile Picture blog post and there are so many things that have happened over the last year and a half of being a mother. But as I think about it, I think a significant point was the beginning.

Many women have experienced discrimination in the workplace, and so my experience may be familiar to some. It all started with announcing the big news to the boss-I am pregnant! At that point, I was a happy corporate employee working in Batavia for a laid back firm. I wasn’t particularly thrilled about my job because accounting was rather boring and over the years I realized I was more creative and personable than many of my teammates. I was happy to stay because a new baby meant a whole slew of upcoming expenses from medical bills, diapers, formula, you know the drill!

Unfortunately, it turned out the universe had a different plan for me! Once I started showing and having regular pregnancy symptoms (tiredness, pregnancy brain, OMG I need the toilet again) I received an irregularly high number of review meetings with my boss about my “sub-par performance” and frequent bathroom breaks. By my 3rd trimester, I had anxiety going into the office feeling like nothing I did was ever right.

Looking back, I firmly believe everything in life happens for a reason and when given a “lemon, we must make lemonade”. My version of that was exploring career opportunities and taking charge of professional life. During the last few months of my pregnancy, I interviewed with a financial planning firm and decided that being an advisor to individuals is what I wanted to spend the rest of my life doing.

This was the first time I made a conscious career decision based on values and finding fulfillment in my professional career, and not just going for the highest paying opportunity. What followed was a maternity leave spent rocking my baby Benjamin to sleep as I studied for my license exams to start my new career. Between the lack of sleep at night and Ben’s inability to breastfeed I was a walking, talking zombie! I still can’t believe I managed to pass all three of my exams on the first try!

To anyone who is contemplating making a career switch in the midst of your pregnancy-I hope you realize you are stronger than you think!

Colleen, thank you so much for the note! I hope other moms realize that anything they set their minds to is possible. They say “if your mind can conceive it, you can achieve it”. I can’t wait to read your blog posts also :))
