Stop Canceling on Yourself

FTM Canceling on YourselfThe school year is well underway in my hometown in middle America. The kids are settling into a routine, activities are full-speed ahead, and I am playing catch-up. On any given day, I am trying to get everything done that needs to get done today and everything that wasn’t finished yesterday. I am trying to cram as much into my time when they are all at school as possible, but I am failing!

By the time I get home from dropping off my littlest at school, I basically have two hours a day to attend meetings, run errands, go grocery shopping, do chores, work from home, complete volunteer duties, shower, and anything else that is necessary for the day’s survival before having to head back to pick all of them up. Forget about doing anything extra (as in just for me), or even…for fun!

I don’t know about you, but I do know what I think and what other moms tell me. This #survivalmode of parenting totally stinks! We all do it. We are just trying to survive the day. Yes, some parents appear more pulled together or maybe they have planned ahead better than some of us. But, no matter if you are a full-time mom that works from home, outside of the home, or somewhere in between…we are all on an equal playing field when it comes to putting our needs in front of our families needs.

We don’t do it enough and this needs to stop.

We have to work on finding better balance between responsibilities at home, at work, in our volunteer roles, and taking care of ourselves. I wish there was a no-fail trick that could work for everyone or that there was a way to freeze time so that we could get it all done without losing out on time with our precious babies. When we are with them, we want to be present and “enjoy them while they’re little “ like everyone warns us. Yet, too many of us try to multitask by checking email, sending messages, and communicating via social media.

Phones and tablets make it really easy to multitask, but they also make it really hard to put down the device. We can use them for almost anything, but there is one app that doesn’t exist. One to tell you to put down your to-do list and stop letting distractions from your device and the business of your life get in the way of what matters.

Yes, your family matters, but I am referring to YOU.

You matter. You matter to your family, to your God, and to all of us.

Take care of yourself. Stop canceling on your dreams. Stop canceling on your plans. Stop canceling on yourself.

You are worth this time, too. You are too valuable of a human being to let this time pass and not take advantage of the opportunities around you. Go out and do something for you. Even if it’s just a small baby step like enjoying your coffee or wine on your patio in peace while your family is occupied. Then expand your horizons and conquer a dream or make plans. Take a class or just take a walk with an old friend. Make time to do healthy things so that when you are present with your family, you are renewed and not operating on an empty tank.

Schedule your “Me Time” on your calendar today. Don’t let another day go by!!

You wouldn’t cancel a meeting with your boss, so don’t cancel on yourself.

There are no happy accidents.

Great reminder – it’s all too easy to forget the value of ourselves – we function better when we take that needed “me” time – and we don’t teach our children the value of self-care if we don’t show through example how to take care of ourselves. And there I go – talking about how “me” time affects others – when “Just because mom needs time to herself” should be enough.
