An Open Letter from a Non-Allergy Mom to an Allergy Mom:

Dear Allergy MomDear Allergy Mom,

I am so thrilled that our children are in class together and have become such good friends. My daughter talks about yours constantly. And she is thrilled that your daughter is able to come over to our house tomorrow.

Thank you for also calling my attention to your daughter’s allergies. I was not aware, so it is good that you said something. And now, I’d like to ask for your help and understanding as I do my best to learn about those allergies.

I am going to have a lot of questions. This is partly due to the fact that I have no first hand experience will food allergies. I’m not trying to call attention to your daughter or make you feel uncomfortable, it’s just that you’ve had years to learn and research, and I am very new to this.

Please don’t assume I know anything. Any information you can share would be super helpful as I try to make sure you and your daughter feel comfortable and safe in my home. I don’t want to cause her to have a reaction any more than you want her to have one, so I’m all ears. And I’m more than willing to do whatever it takes to keep her safe.

If you need me to wipe things down or prepare food in a special place or offer only specific food options – just let me know. Just because I don’t think of it first, doesn’t mean I am not sensitive to her allergies – it is just not on my radar right now. So, please, help me in the beginning, and I promise I will get better.

I want our daughters to have a great time and to focus on having fun together instead of being concerned about who is eating what, so of course I will offer the kids the same allergen-free food options if I am aware of what is acceptable.

Now, I don’t expect a laundry list of good and/or bad foods, but just clue me into a couple of things that are easy and work well. I am not trying to be insensitive or to exclude your daughter in any way, I just need a little help and a few reminders now and then.

So, thank you for bearing with me. I am excited to have your daughter over and to get to know you as well.

Talk Soon,

Non-Allergy Mom, Emily Hill
